Knit Block - Rotation Three Samples

So I figured I had to present the samples I created in the first 3 days of trying to pick up Knit, I thought that rather than presenting it in a book I'd do it a little differently..

Knit Block - Rotation Three

Third Rotation was Knit, nothing like the knitting i was used to with needles knitting on machines was a lot harder than i expected it to be. I went in with very high hopes only to come out by about the third day of using the knitting machines full of a lot of doubts as to how i was going to manage getting the knit samples done. I had a break through one Thursday and managed to get a decent sample, it then gave me the motivation for the coming week which i successfully managed to get some great work out of. Obviously the work could be better, but to pick something up in two weeks and perfect it is almost impossible, so I tried to come close enough..

The techniques we were learning day by day were great, no one ever got it right the first time, many broke needles, dropped stitches, or whole pieces of work, or you could have just repeatedly break a machine like i did. I decided to use a wider knit for the majority of my work as thicker yarns worked better with my work, and personally with the colour palettes and techniques i chose i don't think they'd have looked the same on a small knit machine, plus it would have jammed my work by the thickness of my yarns.
Anyway here's some images of pieces i did from my time in knit (un-mounted)

Weave Block - Rotation Two

After the two weeks in Print we did the next two in Weave. I've never used a weave machine before so i was pretty excited! It was pretty simple once you got used to all the basics, we were really left to our own devices for 2 weeks - we were told to have 8 Weave samples of reasonable size obviously linking to our colour pallette but to be inventive with our styles, materials etc.
I was motivated the full two weeks and enjoyed watching my progress and my strength in design and knowledge of Weave progressing as the days went on, i loved the fact that the work was really tedious i think it the whole making and the final outcome once you take it off the loom and you have it there in your hand was a really satisfying experience.

Print Block - Rotation One

I started off my rotation with Print, i spent two weeks here and really enjoyed it. Although it was a challenge in the first week as i didn't have as many drawings as everyone else i managed to use some swatch samples and create a few patterned drawings.
In the first week we learnt about Photoshop and how to play around with our drawings. We were then told to play around with our drawings and the way we lay it out, we were to create a bulk pattern which could then be printed with using a variety of colour (from our colour palette) and testing the outcome of some of our ideas.
Overall i enjoyed Print and though the two weeks went very quickly, i feel i struggled the most when it came to Photoshop, but i would get better at that with time its not something i could learn in a week. The printing itself i got some great work out of, i can see how my confidence grows through each piece i did.

First off..

September 2011 came about and i started my BA in Textiles, not as daunting as i expected it to be, but i'd studied there for a year already so i guess i felt quite at home. Our class is of roughly 85 people, we were split into 4 groups (roughly 20 in each) and then rotated into Print, Knit, Weave and Stitch.
Although i had two weeks off in the start of the course due to being bedridden with illness (again) luckily i didn't miss the start of the rotations!

So far i've had two weeks in both Print and Weave, really enjoyed both. We then had an assessment to see how we were getting on, i'm doing well however i need to catch up on my Rough Guide Project and the drawing exercises that were done that i missed due to being ill.
We had our Christmas break where we were given a Swatch Book Project which we've een told to present in our February Assessment. I am now onto my second week of Knit, i struggled in the first week as i kept dropping stitches, hopefully with patience and time this week i will create some great samples to show in my Assessment.
